EU: Plan to cancel anti-dumping tariffs on energy-saving lamps in October
Yesterday, the reporter learned from the Ministry of Commerce that the European Commission has planned to cancel the 66% anti-dumping tariff imposed on energy-saving light bulbs produced in China in October 2007. Since energy-saving light bulbs imported from China are 20% more energy efficient than conventional light bulbs, the elimination of anti-dumping tariffs on this product will help Europe reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“These tariffs have caused the price of such bulbs to rise by two-thirds in the European market, and this is the main reason for the cancellation of the anti-dumping tax rate in the EU.†According to industry trade experts, the EU was once the main overseas market for energy-saving light bulb companies in China. The collection of anti-dumping duties has reduced the number of energy-saving lamps exported to the EU by more than 70%.
It is reported that China has always been a major exporter of lighting products, and energy-saving lamp production accounts for 80% of the global market share. However, due to the EU's five-year anti-dumping duty on energy-saving light bulbs produced in China in 2001, China's exports to the EU were only $130 million.
Another reason for canceling the anti-dumping tariffs on China's energy-saving light bulbs stems from the fact that the EU has recently passed an agreement. According to reports, the EU member states have already adopted the resolution of replacing old-fashioned incandescent bulbs with high energy consumption with energy-saving fluorescent lamps. According to estimates by the European Commission, if all households in the EU change incandescent lamps into energy-saving lamps, they can reduce household lighting by 60%. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, energy-saving light bulbs imported from China are 20% more energy efficient than conventional light bulbs. Eliminating anti-dumping tariffs on this product will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
