Low-end applications
"Design" is the upstream link of the chip industry chain, and is also the most profitable link, accounting for a higher proportion of the entire industry's output value. According to statistics from the China Semiconductor Industry Association, sales of China's integrated circuit industry reached 541.13 billion yuan in 2017, a year-on-year increase of 24.8%. The sales in the design segment was 207.35 billion yuan, accounting for 38.32%.
Looking at the new Third Board market, chip design companies are mainly involved in low-end application scenarios such as consumer electronics, smart homes, battery power, and the Internet of Things. Wei Chen said: "These industries have grown rapidly and there are no leading enterprises of scale. Similar to high-end integrated chips such as CUP, the threshold is high."
Integrated circuits are capital-intensive, technology-oriented industries. At present, China's integrated circuit market is the largest in the world, and it accounts for nearly 60% of the global market share. However, domestic chip self-sufficiency rate is less than 10%.
The chip manufacturing process is technically and financially intensive. The high price of equipment requires a large number of R&D personnel at the same time, and it requires timely process iterations. This is difficult for a new third board company with a small scale to play a role in this area.
