Imitating aircraft engine: new LED lighting cooling solution

A new type of LED lamp was successfully developed by the US Department of Energy and the University of Maryland.

The LED lamp has 1500 lumens and can emit the equivalent of 100 watts of halogen lamps, and consumes only 1/3 of the energy. What technology does it rely on to achieve such lighting efficiency? Answer: The high-speed air injection technology originally used for GE aircraft engines.

Although everyone agrees on the superiority of LEDs in terms of energy and longevity, there are still critics who believe that LEDs are not bright enough. This is closely related to the heat dissipation of general LEDs. In this LED lamp, there are two small bellows-type devices that drive high-speed air jets, and the generated airflow hits the built-in heat dissipation device to achieve the cooling effect. They suck in air, and then eject the air from the same opening at a faster rate. In fact, they expand and contract to promote high-speed air flow. This idea is derived from the design principle of the surface air flow control system used by GE jet engines.

Although this innovation is not as breakthrough as in the traditional concept, this cross-field application innovation has undoubtedly become the most economical and least risky innovation path in this era.
