Linear Technology Introduces 3-Channel Constant Current LED Driver
Linear Technology has introduced the LT3496, a 2MHz DC/DC converter designed to operate as a 3-channel constant current LED driver. Each channel of the LT3496 can drive up to eight 500mA LEDs in series, so the device can drive up to 24 500mA LEDs with up to 96% efficiency. All three channels operate with separate True Color PWMTM signals, so each channel can be independently dimmed with a dimming ratio of up to 3000:1. The fixed frequency, current mode architecture ensures stable operation over a wide supply voltage and output voltage range. The frequency adjustment pin allows the user to program the frequency from 330kHz to 2.1MHz to optimize efficiency while minimizing external component size. The thermally enhanced 4mm x 5mm QFN package allows the LT3496 to be a very compact solution for 50W LED applications.
The LT3496 senses the output current at the high side of the LED for buck, buck-boost or boost configuration. The user can program the output current range of each channel with an external sense resistor. Each of the three independent driver channels has an internal 750mA, 45V NPN switch and a built-in gate driver for PMOS disconnect. Other features include LED open circuit protection and thermal limits.
The LT3496EUFD is available from stock in a thermally enhanced 28-lead 4mm x 5mm QFN package. Buy in 1,000-piece quantities starting at $3.50 each.
The LT3496IUFD is tested and guaranteed to operate from a -40oC to 125oC operating junction temperature range and is available from stock in 1,000-piece quantities starting at $4.20 each.
