Power Integrations has released a new reference design (DER-281) detailing the design of a 15 W PAR38 downlight driver with up to 85% efficiency, which can be achieved without the use of unreliable high-voltage bulk electrolytic capacitors. This innovative dimming design uses the LNK405EG, one of the LinkSwitch-PH family of LED driver ICs, to be compatible with most thyristor dimmers for flicker-free dimming without sacrificing reliability and efficiency.
In the past, typical thyristor dimmers were designed for incandescent lamps, and the incandescent lamps consume an order of magnitude more power than LED lamps when the equivalent light output is achieved. The low current requirements of LED lamps (especially during dimming) can cause the thyristors to turn off or oscillate unexpectedly, creating an unpleasant flickering effect.
