Last month, Tesla CTO JB Straubel gave a presentation on Tesla's battery technology improvements at the NaTIonal Entrepreneur Week in Mexico. According to Straubel, the energy density of the Tesla Model 3 battery is 30% higher than the Model S.

When talking about the batteries produced by the Tesla super factory Gigafactory, the company's executives always mentioned the 30% figure, but most of them refer to the cost, not the energy density of the battery.

In this Straubel presentation, he directly linked cost to battery energy density:

“In fact, when you increase the energy density of the battery, it also reduces the cost of the battery. Generally speaking, the cost we define refers to the raw materials in the battery. Therefore, if you want to reduce the cost, the best way is to reduce the raw materials. , increasing energy density. This is a key, very beneficial to our research and development work, and this is what happens in real life."

The performance of our batteries is steadily increasing every year – for a given storage energy battery every year. From the first Roadster to the Model S, our battery energy density has increased by nearly 40%, while the Model 3 will increase by 30%. These results are derived from our continuous improvement."

In fact, in other products recently released by Tesla, the impact of increasing the energy density of the battery can also be seen. Both Tesla Powerwall 2 and Powerpack 2 have high energy density at the battery level.

Tesla Powerpack 2 is a good example. The first generation of Powerpack AC weighs 1720 kg, has an energy capacity of 95 kWh, and has a battery pack energy density of 55 Wh/kg. The new generation Powerpack 2 weighs 1622 kg, has an energy capacity of 210 kWh, and has a battery pack grade energy density of 130 Wh/kg. In just one year, the battery pack's energy density increased by 136%. Of course, for a fixed energy storage system like the Powerpack, cost is a more important factor than weight.
