UK $3.6 million to research advanced fiber lasers


The consortium led by British ultrafast fiber laser manufacturer Fianium is preparing to evaluate and develop an advanced supercontinuum white fiber laser for biomedical imaging applications.

The $3.6 million project is a joint venture between several agencies, including the UK Technology Strategy Council, Fianium, the Photonic Materials and Photonics Center (CPPM) at the University of Bath, and Edinburgh Instruments. The project name is WhiteLase

The project aims to develop advanced UV sources and ultra-bright visible advanced sources to evaluate the possibility of adopting this technology in fluorescent image applications. The new laser will provide ultraviolet light with a wavelength of less than 300 nm and produce an order of magnitude higher spectral power than existing commercial super-light sources.

These funds are recognized for our leading supercontinuum fiber laser technology, said John Clowes, Fianium Business Development Director, WhiteLase project coordinator. Our collaboration with the Photonic Materials and Photonics Center at the University of Bath has been very successful in the past and is useful for developing new white-light fiber lasers for this bioimaging technology.

CPPM team leader William Wadsworth said: CPPM has a long history of research and development of super photonic materials. The challenges brought by WhiteLase project will undoubtedly lead us to develop exciting photonic crystal fibers.
