Volvo uses drones and robots to automate dumping (Figure)

Volvo announced earlier this week that the company's ROAR ( Robot Autonomous Rejection Processing System) project has entered the prototype testing phase. The original design of the system is to automatically dump the garbage in the roadside bin into the funnel inside the garbage truck without human assistance.

The project was originally planned to use robots to do the job, which would require a map indicating the approximate location of the trash can to provide path navigation (as well as auxiliary tools such as GPS, lidar and accelerometers). In the new plan, Volvo joined the drone as the "eye of the garbage truck" to tell the exact location of the trash can.

We expect more and more automation solutions to emerge in the future. This project can inspire our imagination and try new automation research directions to shape an automated transportation system for the future. ”
