Avid builds high-brightness LED package lines

As the submount package of high-brightness LED chips is built to ensure temperature, brightness and heat dissipation efficiency, Avid Electronics plans to begin volume production soon and expects significant sales growth in 2008.

Avid said that the submount package will enter mass production in December. The production line has an annual production capacity of 12 million units and is expected to reach NT$240 million in production value for one year. The company said it has received customer orders and most of these customers are from Asia and Europe.

RendyTu, general manager of Avid, said that LED samples have been supplied to a lighting application manufacturer in Taiwan. The company plans to expand its LED field to the automotive market two years later and begin deployment in low-power LED applications such as backlighting.

Avid said it will reach 100,000 units of submounted LED shipments in December. With the penetration of LEDs in traditional backlights, the company expects to ship between 80 and 900,000 units in 2008. Different types of LEDs, Avid is optimistic about the penetration of white LEDs, white LEDs will be the main components of traditional lighting applications within 10 years.
