China's semiconductor manufacturing ushered in the new trend of sharing IDM

Intel, TI, Samsung, Winbond, Mau are the world's more well-known IDM (integrated device manufacturing) companies, these companies throughout the entire semiconductor chain, covering the design from the previous paragraph, the middle of the manufacturing and packaging and testing, and then to Segment market sales. However, the high cost of creating such IDM companies has left many companies with ideas daunted. As a result, the concept of a virtual IDM company was proposed, and people in the industry hoped that this virtual hand-in-hand approach between Foundry and Fabless could build an entire semiconductor eco-chain. However, there are still problems, such as the rational use of production capacity and cooperation in technology development. In order to solve these problems, some people in the industry proposed to share the IDM (CIDM) model.

CIDM adapts to the current stage?

CIDM was first created by overseas companies. The entire model has been practiced in many places such as Singapore, the United States, and Taiwan. TECH is a relatively well-known CIDM company. It is made up of Texas Instruments, the Singapore Government Economic Development Bureau (EDS), The four companies, Cannon and Hewlett-Packard, jointly invested to produce memory, and plan to make profits on the basis of meeting self-demand DRAM. Zhang Shengjing, general manager of Singrui Optoelectronics, recently introduced at the Micro Semiconductor Summit. After the TECH passed its own design process, it manufactured according to the needs of the design, and then formed a product through package testing, and finally pushed it to the sales market. The entire system has been very successful in its operation. TECH has generated a certain profit in the second year after its establishment. Unfortunately, TI ended its withdrawal due to its difficulty in expanding its scale and TECH was acquired by Micron.

At present, China's semiconductor industry is rapidly developing both in terms of production capacity and technology. The establishment of a CIDM company is a characteristic development path for exploring and realizing the integration of upstream and downstream semiconductors. Zhang Jianjing hopes that the CIDM model will drive the development of China's semiconductor industry. Through this type of integrated resources, he will break through a number of key technologies and products, and further solve the problem of weak matching capacity among domestic industry chains.

"Taking Howe Optoelectronics as an example, ten years ago Howe Power's development and production technology in the CIS (Image Sensor) chip area was tied with Sony and Samsung. However, after ten years of decline, the biggest reason is that Sony and Samsung can The Long' system feedbacks all kinds of information in the design and production process to the design department, so as to improve the speed of technology improvement.” Zhang Jianjing pointed out that at the current stage, downstream manufacturing links are very important for upstream design support. However, the cost of investing and maintaining a wafer fab is too high. In response to this trend, Zhang Haojing believes that exploring CIDM will be an advantageous choice.

At the same time, Zhang Xiaojing pointed out: "CIDM is not quite the same as virtual IDM. CIDM is a joint venture between several design companies to set up a Fab. It actually owns foundry factories and can rationally plan production capacity structures based on the actual needs of each design company. This is shared and shared. The IDM company, while the virtual IDM refers to a design company that entrusts the product to the foundry for processing and production, but the capacity of the foundry is specifically designed to meet the needs of the design company, and this part of the production capacity cannot be used by other companies. The advantages of CIDM are shared by all, resources are shared, risks are shared, and the ability to synergy is greatly increased. There are many benefits.”

Compared with advanced foundries, Zhang Jianjing believes that the operation of the CIDM model is much simpler. "The requirements for the number of types of processes in the initial stage of CIDM are not high, and it may be possible to provide 10 to 20 types, and the R&D power is more concentrated. In addition, the capacity allocation in CIDM can be determined through the internal negotiation of its constituent companies. The demand will increase production capacity; if there is excess capacity, it will be able to provide services to external customers, so the excess production capacity will come in handy. This model can be used to attack and retreat."

Ownership will be the biggest dispute

Despite its feasibility, the implementation of the CIDM model in China may not be very smooth. At present, China's IT and IC industries are still in a state of passive development. The lack of talent, backward technology, and lack of advanced equipment have caused Chinese companies to be at the tail end of international trends. CIDM in China needs the foundry and integrated circuit design companies to build together, integrate design and manufacturing, and jointly develop. These characteristics will bring some challenges to both design and production: First, for manufacturing, the foundry needs to provide customers with tailor-made process flow, especially in the CIDM mode where the customer types are not uniform, and the foundry needs to provide diversification and low The cost of full service capabilities. Secondly, for the design industry, the Fab plant needs to penetrate the design process throughout the manufacturing and sealing process, and it needs to ensure that the design is consistent with the pace of technological development. "The CIDM model also has certain challenges. A CIDM may serve 5 or 10 customers. It is common. Therefore, it requires the Fab factory to provide technology to 5 to 10 companies. This is more challenging than providing services to only a single customer. In addition, the coordination of these 5 to 10 customers is also a difficult point, it is best not to have competition, the customer faced with the market must be different, so the collaborative work is very important.” Zhang Hao Jing said.

In addition, the ownership of production capacity in the CIDM model is also controversial. After all, CIDM is a combination of multiple companies. "If I am an investor, I have the right to use the production of things." Zhang Hao Jing said. Although this special priority approach meets the needs of CIDM internal companies, it also limits the development of CIDM. This restriction makes it difficult to serve a large number of designers. If the CIDM model only provides the remaining production capacity, it may cause dissatisfaction with other IDM vendors.

The CIDM model may adapt to the specific conditions of the Chinese semiconductor industry, but its problems cannot be ignored.

Residual Current Circuit Breaker

RCCB named Residual Current Circuit Breaker. When there is human electricity shock or if the leakage current of the line exceeds the prescribed value, Residual current circuit breaker/RCCB(without over-current protection) will cut off the power rapidly to protect human safety and prevent the accident due to the current leakage. The rccb switch which made from Korlen electric can be used as infrequent changeover of the line in normal situation.

Korlen electric ---- the rccb switch manufacturer, produces types of Residual Current Circuit Breaker. It is applicable to industrial site, commercial site, tall building and civil house.
