Tree barrier inspection is an important means to ensure the safe operation of the power grid. The UAV combined with data processing software provides an efficient operation mode for tree barrier inspection. Aerospace Vision With the development and innovation of powerful photogrammetry technology, the first generation of UAV power line inspection system PowerMatrix V1.0 was launched in 2015. The system is based on a fixed-wing UAV equipped with a digital camera, using photogrammetry technology, combined with the ground data processing platform, digitally reconstructed the surface line and wires of the power line channel, and realized the quantitative detection of obstacles in the channel. After nearly two years of project application and practice testing, PowerMatrix V1.0 has been recognized by users and received wide acclaim, but it has encountered some problems and faced some challenges.

(1) Although the fixed-wing UAV provides efficient image acquisition capability for the inspection personnel, it has certain difficulty in handling and has high requirements for the landing site, which is not conducive to the development of inspection operations.

(2) Some inspection units have been equipped with multi-rotor UAVs, and the flight team is relatively mature. It is necessary to further explore the potential of rotary wing drones in line channel inspection and improve equipment utilization.

(3) In order to achieve the goal of quantitative inspection of tree barriers, it is necessary to lay out ground control points, increase the difficulty of learning, extend the training period, and increase the workload of the operators and restrict the efficiency of inspection.

(4) The spatial position of the wire is completely dependent on manual measurement. Although the measurement result is high in accuracy, the manual workload is large, and the degree of automation needs to be improved.

In response to the above four major issues, the Aerospace Vision R&D team has been concentrating on research and development for a year, and is now launching the upgraded version of the UAV power line system PowerMatrix V2.0. The main functions and advantages are as follows:

Full support for two series of fixed-wing and rotary wing drones


The fixed-wing UAV with catapult take-off and parachute landing is upgraded to a fixed-wing UAV with vertical take-off and landing functions. The requirements for take-off and landing are lower and the operation is more convenient. Added support for multi-rotor drones, and is widely compatible with common models such as “Elves” and “Wu” in Dajiang.

PowerMatrix V2.0 fully supports two series of fixed-wing and multi-rotor UAVs, which fully exploits the advantages of fixed-wing UAVs in speed and navigation time, and has the ability to operate at high distances with high efficiency; The advantage of man-machine flexibility and convenience, using existing equipment and teams, through the installation of software can be carried out to do tree barrier quantitative inspection services.

High-precision 3D reconstruction of power line channels without ground control point assistance


PowerMatrix V2.0 utilizes the beam method regional network adjustment technology to treat the UAV GPS data as an air control point, realizing high-precision 3D reconstruction of power line channels without ground control points. Compared with the current UAV visual inspection method, no additional field work is added, and only a set of software can be installed to upgrade the manual interpretation qualitative inspection to a more automated quantitative inspection.

The operation mode of the ground control point is not required, the training period is greatly shortened, and the operation efficiency of the electric power inspection is improved, and the tree barrier measurement result is comparable in accuracy to the conventional laying ground control point.

Computer-aided automatic/semi-automatic power line measurement

Wire space position measurements are upgraded from full manual operation to computer-aided automatic/semi-automatic measurements. The computer automatic power line feature detection is mainly based on manual guidance, which improves the power line measurement efficiency several times. The high-precision wire detection and positioning algorithm enables the accuracy of automatic measurement results to reach or exceed the artificial level, reducing the adverse effects of human measurement errors on the inspection results.
