Toshiba and Toshiba Lighting Technology demonstrated the technology for improving the color rendering of LED lamps by simply installing a color conversion filter on the illuminated surface of the LED lamp at the "2011 Lighting Exhibition". According to reports, even with an ordinary LED lamp with an average color rendering index (Ra) of 70 to 85, Ra can be increased to 90 or more by installing a color conversion filter. At present, the technology has been basically completed, and Toshiba will consider whether to productize according to the reaction of visitors at the exhibition.
In the live demonstration, the LED light with Ra of 85 and R9 (bright red) of 46 was converted into light with Ra of 94 and R9 of 97. The color of the object looks very bright under the illumination of this light. In the past, in order to improve color rendering, in most cases, it is necessary to install LED chips with higher color rendering properties for the lamps. The luminaires using ordinary LED chips can easily improve color rendering after the color conversion filter is installed. In addition, Toshiba also installed a filter that would make red and green look very bright on a common LED light and demonstrated it.
The color conversion filter is made by incorporating a pigment into a resin material, and the pigment is characterized by filtering out light of a specific wavelength. For example, the pigment used in the R9 filter can filter out light near the red wavelength. After installing the color conversion filter, the brightness of the LED lamp will be reduced by nearly 10%, but the object looks very bright under the illumination of this light, so the brightness reduction is not obvious.
When developing the filter, Toshiba spent a lot of effort in selecting pigments. The reason is that the pigment used is an organic material, so there is a risk of rapid deterioration. Toshiba did not disclose details in this regard, but said it developed a pigment with less risk of degradation, so that the filter ensures a life of 40,000 hours.
According to Toshiba, in addition to the use of pigments, a method of preparing a color conversion filter can be used to lay a multilayer film on the surface of the resin. However, when a multilayer film is used, the angle of light irradiation is dependent, for example, the color of the light directly below the filter and the side of the filter will be different, but the filter incorporating the pigment will illuminate the light. No dependencies.
