New interface technology: USB type-c for bidirectional transmission

The old USB charging application is mainly concentrated on the mobile phone, and since the USB interface is inconsistent, it is almost impossible to insert it once. In addition, the USB protocol interface can only be 5V, 500mA current capability, and the power can only be transmitted in one direction. With more and more devices having USB interface requirements, new standard interface technologies have emerged, completely overcoming the limitations of traditional USB charging.

David LucchetTI pointed out that USB type-c has the following characteristics: 1. The maximum data transmission speed reaches 10Gbit/s, which is also the standard of USB 3.1; 2. Supports the "positive and backward insertion" function that can be inserted from both sides; 3. The standard-size connector of the type-c connector can pass 3A current, and also supports "USB PD" that exceeds the existing USB power supply capability, and can provide up to 100W of power.

The USB type-c port has USB 3.1 and 3.0, and USB 3.1 has a faster transfer speed. The power transfer of the new interface technology is bidirectional and can have two transmit power modes. Users can not only use their laptops to charge mobile devices, but they can also use other devices or mobile power to charge their laptops. That is, the previously charged device can also be used as a rechargeable device. In addition, the USB-TypeC is backward compatible, and the USB-TypeC is compatible with older USB standards, but users need to purchase additional adapters to complete the compatibility.

"USB Type-C has a total of five protocols. The previous protocol is about 5V, 2A, and 10W. The most important application is in handheld devices. The larger power is 5V, 2A or 12V, 1.5A, and can be up to 18W. If large Power 36W, Pad, Tablet or other devices can use such USB Type-C protocol. For high power, it can reach the power range of 60W. For Protocol 5, it can reach the range of 100W, 20V, 5A." David LucchetTI said.

It is understood that in the power management IC, STMicroelectronics currently uses Combo chip, integrated (PFC + LLC) in one STCMB1, plus DC-DC, and its USB3.0 interface technology.

The industry expects that the number of devices equipped with USB Type-C technology USB3.0\3.1 interface will reach 2.1 billion units. After 2016, 12% of mobile terminals will use Type-C interfaces like this.
