Beijing time on December 16th news, according to foreign media reports, BlackBerry and TCL reached an agreement to authorize the latter to use their brand on future mobile phones, and sell these phones worldwide.
The two companies announced the agreement on Thursday but did not disclose specific terms. The deal portrays the future of BlackBerrys to BlackBerry investors and fans. TCL has created two Android touchscreen phones for BlackBerry: DTEK50 and DTEK60.
Since becoming CEO of BlackBerry three years ago, Cheng Shouzong has been pushing the company out of the mobile hardware business and vigorously developing software and services. He said in September that BlackBerry will outsource equipment design, production and marketing.
The deal will give TCL the exclusive right to sell BlackBerry-branded phones in global markets other than Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Cheng Shouzong said that he is negotiating a deal with a Indian company, so the agreement with TCL does not include India, indicating that BlackBerry will reach a similar agreement with the Indian company. A BlackBerry spokesperson did not comment on this.
Cheng Shouzong said in an outsourcing plan that BlackBerry may enter into licensing deals with a number of handset manufacturers around the world, offering dozens of BlackBerry-branded handsets in different countries. The agreement with TCL limits that only a few vendors will be able to sell BlackBerry branded phones.
BlackBerry's global smartphone market share has fallen to less than 1%, but in the eyes of some professional users in the US and Europe, its brand still has high value. A large number of Indonesian and Nigerian consumers still favor the BlackBerry. (Compile / Frost Leaf)
